TEDx Talk

How do you decide when there's no good option?

Three near-death experiences, one irreversible call, and what pressure taught me about deciding when it matters most.

Recorded at TEDxSurrey. Original title: How to Turn Pain into Your SuperPower

What the talk is about

Not the crash. The decision.

In November 2010 I lost control on black ice on the Coquihalla Highway and flipped onto the roof, into the path of a fully loaded semi-truck.

I spent a year and a half trying to save my leg. Then I chose to have it amputated. Three of my four surgeons advised against it.

The day after the surgery I'm smiling for the photo. The commando. The strong father. Inside I was broken. I thought I'd made the wrong decision.

And the pain didn't leave with the leg. What finally moved it wasn't more toughness. It was changing the story I was telling myself about what happened.

Most hard decisions don't stall because you're missing information. They stall because every option costs you something.

That's what this talk is about. What pressure does to the way you decide. And how to make the call anyway.

Today I take the same work into companies. I work with owners and leadership teams on the gap between deciding and doing, where high-stakes decisions stall and money quietly leaks.
